Mountfield and Whatlington is a Church of England Controlled School for children aged from 4+ to 11, and currently has about 70 pupils on roll. The information in the prospectus provides an introduction to the school. Further school policies are available on request and at the induction meeting for new parents in the summer term. We encourage and welcome visits from parents. The School is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty halfway between the villages of Mountfield and Whatlington. It was originally founded in 1846. The present schoolhouse and buildings were built and opened in 1874 although many additions have been added since this time. There are four classrooms and extra teaching bays for Design Technology, Art, Cookery and individual tuition. The School has a large modern hall used for PE, dance and drama, assemblies, plays and concerts. Each classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard so that ICT forms an integral part of teaching and learning. Each class has an extensive library of reading books and there is also a non-fiction library and large collection of graded readers for guided reading. The children are able to use the playing fields at the rear of the school, plus hard surface playgrounds and the school garden during their breaks. The school grounds have recently been developed to provide an additional bark-chipped play area, a fenced environmental area for wild-life habitats, including a pond, and a mini-orchard which is also home for our rabbits and guinea-pigs. There is also a special canopied area for reception children so they can play and learn in an outside environment as well as the classroom. The children are drawn from the two villages, and also from many of the surrounding villages of Battle, Sedlescombe, Robertsbridge, Netherfield and even from as far away as Hastings. The school is well supported by the two parishes and by the local community. There is a strong and active PTA who are always looking for new ideas and helpers. At Mountfield and Whatlington we believe that early childhood is the foundation on which children build their lives. We have a friendly, caring atmosphere and instill family values and attitudes in the children. Our small class sizes allow for more individual time to be given to each child. Each class teacher is supported by a teaching assistant, giving a high staff to pupil ratio. We believe that children learn through experience, through everything that happens around them. We provide the children with a stimulating school environment, where their achievements are celebrated through displays of their work, through a system of rewards and by the praise and encouragement of staff. We aim to provide the children with a variety of activities through a carefully planned curriculum. There is a wide range of sports clubs and extra-curricular activities for children to join. We believe also that by providing a caring environment the children quickly develop self-confidence and learn to act independently in thought and deed. School should be a partnership with home. By developing effective communications with parents and by working together, we believe we can provide the best possible education for your child. Headteacher: Mr. J. Hellett |
